The discussion isn’t a scientific one, it’s a social one. If someone said that they felt like they were a turtle and wanted to be called a turtle, 1) I might wonder if they are mentally ill, but most mentally ill people (and you know a ton, btw) are completely harmless, wonderful human beings, and 2) If I DO THINK that they are mentally ill, I may decide I don’t want them babysitting my kids or something, but I wouldn’t be MAD AT THEM for it. Imagine walking up to someone you think is mentally ill / disabled and being angry at them or telling them that they aren’t dressing they way you want or calling themselves the right thing – bonkers.
Ok, trans women want to use the women’s restroom and you feel like that’s improper or dangerous – great. There are plenty of examples of non-transgender people sexually assaulting people in bathrooms, so anyone can be dangerous, huh? Conservatives have this thing where they think if they can “see” something, it must be a clue to the person’s inferiority, nefarious nature, etc. Someone is black, brown, transgender, from another country, etc. – they must be BAD. White Americans = GOOD. Nonsense.
